Eco-Rambling On

Greenspace has been a part of my life now for nearly thirteen years. Originally, after only one year of operation, the doors to the business were about to close after the deaths of both the owner and showroom manager. At the time, my wife Lydia and I looked at each other and we knew that somehow we had to keep the business alive. It was unique and visionary. It was so Santa Cruz! Lydia, ever the people person, became the face of the business. I, on the other hand, was the unofficial VP of facilities. I boarded up the windows when we were vandalized, installed exterior flood lights, got sump pumps when we were about to flood, and snaked out the sink drains when they backed up. It was made clear to me that, except for my technical skills, I was to steer clear of the business decisions, which worked fine for me.
Image my surprise when I became owner of the business when Lydia passed away more than two years ago. (Truth be told, I think my wife is looking down and laughing at me). By then, many shops similar to ours had gone out of business for a variety of reasons. We remain one of three in the entire Bay Area. So how to survive in this age of the internet? It’s the question every brick and mortar store now has to ask themselves. We know we have a wonderful, loyal following of customers who have stood by us all these years. It is always our goal to provide the kind of customer service that will make us stand out from the crowd of big box stores and internet retailers. That, and of course, the organic lollipops at our front counter!
