December 2019 news

Eco-Rambling On

The City of Santa Cruz just wrapped up a six-month project replacing the sewer and storm drain lines on my street. It was a big job – much earthmoving equipment, pipe, base rock and concrete were poured. One of the reasons prompting the work was what has occurred every February for the last 21 years that I’ve lived here. During a heavy downpour, the storm drain in front of my house would back up and the street would flood – to the point that you could take a row boat and paddle from the middle of my front yard to the front door of the neighbor across the street – we would call it Lake Ladera! We even had two housemates’ cars partially submerged during deluges.

Needless to say, I’m glad the City decided to address the issue. In addition, I am encouraged with new construction requirements that storm water remains on a property and not get funneled out to the street. This was done during the remodel of the parking lot at Greenspace. A swimming pool-sized gravel-filled catch basin is underneath the pavers in front of our shop allowing the water to filter and recharge the aquifer rather than just flowing out into the ocean. An intelligent approach! It makes sense to me to work with the environment rather than against it, because Mother Nature will always prevail.
